Jacque DiMattia: College Intern

As a political science major, I feel myself leaning more towards a career in public policy. Falling ideally into this realm is environmental science and protection. In the future, and as part of my career goals, I would like to work with an environmental nongovernmental organization or a third political party, such as the Green Party, in order to establish a better working relationship between politics and the environment. I feel this is important because of the benefits we will all receive as a result of a healthy, strong environment. My experience volunteering at The Nature Conservancy, has allowed me to begin to learn “the ropes” of NGOs and has helped me to understand day-to-day orders of business that I am sure will be advantageous on my career path in politics. It was a great learning experience working with TNC, and one that I will never forget.

Interning with the Delaware Chapter…
Jacque DiMattia started with The Nature Conservancy–Delaware Chapter in the fall of 2005 when she and a friend contacted staff and offered to volunteer in order to meet the requirements of a public policy class they were enrolled in at the University of Delaware. As the semester wound down, Jacque mentioned the prospect of a longer fieldwork assignment for the spring semester and her offer was gratefully accepted!

A junior political science major, Jacque was put to work assisting with the planning for the Ponders Tract Earth Day event. Along with assisting with numerous office duties, counting horseshoe crabs and organizing the press clipping files from the last ten years, she arranged port-o-potty delivery, coordinated schedules with leaders of a 4-H Club and Boy and Cub Scout troops and created an information sheet on the proper planting of Black cherry and Red maple trees. Her hard work lead to the successful event held on April 22nd. She, along with the children with whom she planted trees can take pride in their hard work and the forest that Ponders will one day become.
