The Nature Conservancy’s Comments on Proposed Kayak and Canoe LaunchAugust 1, 2007 Re: Blackbird Creek Reserve – The Nature Conservancy’s Comments on Proposed Kayak and Canoe Launch Dear Ms. Rawding: On behalf of the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, I write to support the Division of Soil and Waters application for the construction of a 12 foot by 35 foot kayak and canoe launch in the Blackbird Creek at 801 Blackbird Landing Road as part of the Blackbird Creek Reserve Component of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve. I have visited the site after reviewing the application and plans in your office on July 26, 2007. I am convinced that this project is both an environmentally responsible and reasonable one. It is designed in a way that minimizes impacts to subaqueous lands and it does not impact any wetlands. As one who has paddled the upper reaches of the Blackbird Creek on a number of occasions during the past several years I am grateful that the Division has made the effort to provide this much needed controlled public access for non-motorized kayaks and canoes. This access launch point is appropriately sized for the location and is in keeping with the natural character of the upper reaches of the Blackbird Creek. I thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application and will be present at the public hearing to voice our support for this project. Sincerely, Andrew T. Manus
