Over the years, The Nature Conservancy has gained expertise in land conservation transactions and built partnerships that can help landowners protect wildlife habit, save their land for future generations, and even sometimes reduce landowners’ taxes. For example, tools like conservation easements have successfully protected thousands of acres of Delaware’s rich natural habitat, productive landscapes and open space, while keeping land in private hands and maintaining significant services provided by the landscape such as air and water filtration.
Here’s how the Delaware chapter is working with private landowners to achieve long-lasting, conservation results:
- Working with forward-thinking landowners like Austin Okie and the Fisher Family to secure conservation easements on private properties.
- Conducting annual workshops that bring landowners, conservation organizations, government agencies, and experts in estate planning, real estate law and land use together to discuss options that can support the state’s natural heritage and landowners’ financial, retirement and estate planning goals.
- Working with other land conservation organizations and agencies throughout Delaware to help match individual landowners’ needs with to the most relevant and appropriate private or public conservation program.
