The Conservancy's Marine Initiative engages a diverse array of partners—from fishermen to scientists to community members— in developing collaborative approaches to restoration.

Because of its immense size, reversing the ecological damage in the Chesapeake Bay watershed can only be achieved by working collaboratively across political boundaries and at large scales. For nearly five decades, the Conservancy has been at work in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Global Reach, Local Focus

As a global institution, the Conservancy brings new strategies, resources, expertise and a holistic approach to protecting the lands and waters of the bay. We’re joining our technical expertise and financial resources with the established presence and homegrown knowledge of local partners who have made great strides in the bay watershed.

Protecting the Bay for Nature and People

The Conservancy believes that people are a vital part of ecosystems, and working closely with communities is the cornerstone of our conservation philosophy. Protecting our lands and waters goes hand- in-hand with preserving economic opportunity for people.

Our forestry conservation programs encourage sustainable timber management in places like Dragon Run in Virginia and Pennsylvania’s West Branch Wilderness. Working in concert with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Pennsylvania on the Susquehanna as well as on the Delmarva Peninsula’s Nanticoke River, we’re working with the local agricultural community to encourage environmentally friendly farming methods and preserve wooded river banks and streams to protect water quality.

The Conservancy also promotes sound conservation public policy. In Maryland, we supported efforts to protect open space in this fast developing state. In Virginia, the Conservancy backed the creation of the Rivanna River Basin Commission to help preserve the river’s health. We also served on a blue ribbon panel in Virginia to improve efforts to restore the native oyster.
