Public Funding is Crucial to Conservation

Since 1959, The Nature Conservancy has worked with partners to secure the survival of millions of acres of precious land and seascapes in California for future generations.

On November 7, California voters will have the opportunity to help preserve the state’s land, water and way of life by voting YES on Proposition 84.

California is facing enormous population growth, with 25 million new residents expected by 2040. But the state’s investment in infrastructure is not keeping pace. Current funding for natural resource and environmental protection programs is critically low. Funding from previously passed resource bonds is almost gone, and funding for resources makes up less than 1 percent of the state’s overall budget.

Prop. 84—the Clean Water, Parks and Coastal Protection Bond—is a $5.4 billion bond measure that will provide crucial funding to protect California's natural landscapes: lakes, rivers, bays, beaches, coastline, as well as parks and forests. It will ensure the availability of safe drinking water by improving local water supply reliability and strengthening flood protection. The bond will also provide an unprecedented $90 million for ocean research.

"One of the keys to The Nature Conservancy's success in California in recent years has been our ability to secure public funding to help protect sensitive areas throughout the state," says California Executive Director Mark Burget. "Public funding has enabled the Conservancy to leverage the generous contributions of our supporters to achieve results on a much larger scale. Prop. 84 represents our best hope for protecting California’s lands and waters before unplanned growth takes them away forever."

    Highlights of the bond include:

    • $1.5 billion to protect the water quality of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, a key source of drinking water for 23 million Californians.

    • $928 million to develop river parkways, restore urban streams and keep contaminated runoff from entering our rivers and lakes.

    • $540 million to clean up coastal waters and beaches and protect San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Monica, and San Diego Bays.

    • $500 million to expand and restore the state park system and create local and regional parks in communities that are park poor.

    • $450 million to protect the state’s rich forests, working ranches and wildlife corridors.
