The Nature Conservancy supports the "No on 90" campaign, one of the most broad and diverse coalitions to ever oppose a California ballot initiative. If Prop. 90 passes, it will result in lawsuits and regulatory restrictions that will drain taxpayer dollars away from critical projects to protect our environment and build infrastructure. This "taxpayer trap" would prevent The Nature Conservancy and our partners from accomplishing our mission—protection of California's diverse natural resources.
Prop. 90 Does Not Reform Eminent Domain
Contrary to campaign promises, Prop. 90 is not about reforming eminent domain. It is, in fact, designed to freeze land use and other policies in California. Prop. 90's far-reaching provisions would disable many of the existing economic, land use and environmental regulations upon which The Nature Conservancy relies to protect land and water across the state.
In addition, Prop. 90's destabilizing effect would cost California taxpayers billions of dollars each year, and impact our quality of our life by preventing desperately needed improvements to the state's infrastructure. California is expected to add 25 million new residents by 2040, and responsible, planned growth is crucial. If we do not act now, California's precious natural resources will be lost forever.
