The Buffalo National River

Arkansas contains extraordinary, diverse natural lands -- hardwood forests, native prairies, ancient wetlands, pristine streams, mountain ranges. Below are links to photo galleries that showcase the natural beauty of Arkansas. Enjoy!

  • Big Woods of Arkansas Gallery -- Lining the Cache, Arkansas and White rivers and Bayou DeView in eastern Arkansas, the Big Woods, at 550,000 acres, is the largest corridor of bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the Delta outside of Louisiana’s Atchafalaya River. Here one can find towering cypress trees that have been growing since long before Columbus landed in the New World. Learn more.
  • Ozark Karst (or cave) Gallery -- The Ozark karst ecosystem is an underground wilderness of caves, springs and aquifers that over the millennia have formed in the carbonate bedrock of the Ozark Highlands. Stretching from northern Arkansas and southern Missouri and into eastern Oklahoma, this amazing underground landscape harbors bats, salamanders, fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates, including at least 60 species found nowhere else on Earth. Learn more.
  • Ozark Highlands Rivers Gallery -- It would be hard to imagine Arkansas’ Ozark Highlands without beautiful, clear streams running through the forested mountains and valleys. Streams here are home to more than 100 rare animals, among them fish, crayfish and mussels, some found nowhere else on Earth. Learn more.
  • The Blacklands of southwest Arkansas Gallery -- The state’s blackland prairies and associated woodlands harbor more than 600 types of plants, including 21 globally imperiled plant communities. Some 315 animal species are found at blackland sites, including rare birds like Bachman’s sparrow, Henslow’s sparrow, painted bunting and Harlan’s hawk. Learn more.
  • Ouachita Rivers Gallery -- An impressive suite of rare and imperiled animals thrives in beautiful Ouachita Mountain rivers, streams, lakes and aquifers that millions of people each year use for drinking, agriculture and recreation. Learn more.
  • Conservation Forestry Gallery -- The Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain that covers much of south Arkansas is a mosaic of barrens, prairies, savannas and a variety of forest types. The biologically rich region is home to at least seven federally listed endangered species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker. Learn more.
  • Smith Creek Nature Preserve -- The Conservancy purchased 1,226 acres above the cave, which is home to the state’s largest hibernating colony of endangered Indiana bats, to create Smith Creek Preserve.
