Tucson Conservation Center

Come join the Bear Canyon Wash Arundo donax pull! Saturday, May 30, 2009, 7 -11 a.m.

It is time to attack the Arundo donax (Giant reed) in Bear Canyon Wash. A work day is planned for Saturday, May 30th, 2009 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.  The work will be done on The Nature Conservancy and Pima County properties. The work will be difficult (digging in rock and sand) and it will be hot. When we finish at 11 a.m. we will have lunch at the Conservancy house overlooking Bear Canyon Wash. The house has a large porch to sit and enjoy lunch and the view.

Bring water, snacks, and a lunch. Water will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, hat, work gloves.

Since the parking area near the work site is small, carpooling is recommended. Volunteers will meet in the shopping center located on the NE corner of Tanque Verde Road and Bear Canyon Road at 7 a.m. To reach the designated parking spot when going north on Bear Canyon Rd take the second entrance (right) into the shopping area off of Bear Canyon Road and turn immediately left. Parking spaces are available for volunteers to leave vehicles and carpool to the work site. A map to the carpooling area and to the site will be provided.

Plant Monitoring at Empire Ranch: May 2009

The Nature Conservancy and Bureau of Land Management are going to be doing plant monitoring at Empire Ranch (on Hwy 83 southeast of Tucson near Sonoita) on May 26 and 27 and your help is needed. Grasses will be monitored and recorded, mesquite trees measured, etc. Some volunteers will record data as others collect data.

Some of the sites are close to a road (1/4 mi or less). There is usually 1/4 - 1/2 miles of cumulative walking while recording data on the actual plots.

If leaving from Tucson we will meet at The Nature Conservancy, 1510 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. in Tucson, ready to leave at 7 a.m. Transportation will be provided. Work should end in time to be back to the Conservancy by 5:30-6:00 p.m. For those living in other areas you will be put in contact with others volunteering to arrange carpooling details.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Prepare for the sun with sun screen, hat, water.  Bring a sack lunch and snacks.
