Ramsey Canyon Preserve Plant Monitoring at Empire Ranch: May 2009 The Nature Conservancy and Bureau of Land Management are going to be doing plant monitoring at Empire Ranch (on Hwy 83 southeast of Tucson near Sonoita) on May 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 and your help is needed. Grasses will be monitored and recorded, mesquite trees measured, etc. Some volunteers will record data as others collect data. Some of the sites are close to a road (1/4 mi or less). There is usually 1/4 - 1/2 mile of cumulative walking while recording data on the actual plots. If leaving from Tucson we will meet at The Nature Conservancy, 1510 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. in Tucson, ready to leave at 7 a.m. Transportation will be provided. Work should end in time to be back to the Conservancy by 5:30-6:00 p.m. For those living in other areas you will be put in contact with others volunteering to arrange carpooling details. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Prepare for the sun with sun screen, hat, water. Bring a sack lunch and snacks. Regular Basis Volunteering: The Nature Conservancy's Upper San Pedro Program based at Ramsey Canyon Preserve has an active volunteer program. If you are interested in volunteering on a regular basis and you live in the area, this program needs you! Consider volunteering on a weekly basis. Current ways to volunteer include: greeting preserve visitors; working outdoors on restoration, invasive species, and fuel reductions/fire management projects; selling items in our gift store; removing trash; and working outdoors in maintenance projects such as painting, plumbing, and electrical work. You will gain many rewarding experiences, such as: meeting new friends, a general orientation to The Nature Conservancy, natural history training, on the job training, social events, field trips, and on-going natural history education training. Initial raining usually takes place during the spring and fall seasons. Training materials are offered.
