May 14, 2009: Arizona Forest Project Number One Priority in the Nation
President Barack Obama?s recently released 2010 budget request includes funding to help conserve an iconic piece of Arizona, the San Pedro River and the forest along its banks. Through an extensive review process, the U.S. Forest Service determined the strong ecological values of the San Pedro River Ecosystem Project deserved the highest funding priority in its Forest Legacy Program.

The Verde River emerges from the ground in a deep canyon, 25 miles north of Prescott, where a series of springs well up under a cap of volcanic rock. The springs are fed by aquifers deep below the Big Chino and Little Chino valleys.

October 09, 2007: Four Native Fish Species Returned to Arizona Canyons
A multi-agency team converged in southeastern Arizona last week to carry out one of the largest reintroduction efforts in the state of threatened and endangered fish species. Four varieties of native fish were introduced to five new locations at the Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area (CMA), near Willcox.

March 21, 2007: The Nature Conservancy Applauds Arizona’s Rep. Grijalva For Commitment to Protect National Parks
A bill that would allow the National Park Service to work with a broad range of partners to protect important lands from invasive species—“non-native” plants and animals—passed the House of Representatives Monday by a 390-10 margin thanks to swift action by Natural Resources Committee for National Parks and Forests, Public Lands Subcommittee Chairman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ).

March 19, 2007: BLM Purchases Land Conservation Easement
The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Tucson Field Office completed the purchase of a conservation easement in southeast Arizona along the Babocomari River, called the River Pasture. The Nature Conservancy in Arizona also played an important role in facilitating purchase of the 674-acre conservation easement from the Babacomari Ranch Company L.L.L.P.

February 12, 2007: Donation of Historic Ranch Helps Protect the San Pedro River
A key tributary of the threatened San Pedro River will be protected from development and groundwater pumping thanks to the donation of historic Cobra Ranch to The Nature Conservancy in Arizona by Dan Bates, a Tucson artist and restaurateur. Cobra Ranch includes 1,250 private acres and 10,000 acres of state and U.S. Forest Service grazing leases adjacent to the Conservancy’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve, located about 50 miles northeast of Tucson in Graham County.

January 30, 2006: Mongolian Scientists Study Arizona's Grasslands
Two young women scientists working to save Mongolia’s Gobi Desert are touring grasslands throughout Arizona by mule, horse and foot in an innovative partnership with The Nature Conservancy designed to protect these rapidly disappearing lands on both continents. The Mongolian delegates will visit several sites statewide from January 7 through 21, 2006—hosted by scientists, ranchers and various conservation partners—to learn about the Conservancy’s planning approach.

A group of more than 25 organizations assessing the impacts of non-native invasive plants on Arizona’s natural resources today released a list of 71 plants threatening the state’s wildlands. The categorized information—available in a spiral-bound booklet or electronically—will help everyone from landscape architects to state and federal land managers identify and take steps to manage plants that in a worst-case scenario can alter natural fire and water processes within Arizona.
