Ontario - Pigeon River

The Pigeon River flows through great canyons and cascades over dramatic waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. The Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Parks and The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota worked together to secure the last 750 acres of unprotected land along this wild and historic river, establishing a protected corridor from the Pigeon River Provincial Park west to La Verendrye Provincial Park.

Threats to the Pigeon River include potential impacts from recreational development, mining and dams. This Canadian Heritage River, known as the Boundary Waters Voyageur Waterway, includes inland forests that are home to southern Great Lakes species and northern boreal species. Breeding birds, gray wolves and Canada lynx make their home in the forests of the watershed while globally imperiled species, such as the extra-striped snaketail dragonfly, coaster brook trout and lake sturgeon roam its freshwater habitats.
