Koeye CampCamp Connects First Nations Children to the Land
A canoe filled with singing children rounds the bend. Two humpback whales pull in front of the canoe and draw close together, seeming to escort the vessel home. This was but one of many memorable moments during the week-long Koeye Camp. Each summer, 200 children ages 7-18 attend the camp, located along the central coast of British Columbia. Most campers are children of the Heiltsuk First Nations People, who live within the Great Bear Rainforest.

QQS Projects Society, a Heiltusk First Nation charitable organization, has been The Nature Conservancy’s closest First Nation partner on the coast of British Columbia. Recently, QQS embarked upon a new initiative—establishing a library to serve their remote, coastal community. This library, the only community library along the entire 300-mile coastline of the Great Bear Rainforest, will be dedicated to the memory of a beloved elder the late chief, Ed Martin.

Grizzly Video Expedition: Great Bear Rainforest
Wolves, grizzly bears, dolphins and whales? All in one place? That place is Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest — and our lead scientist Sanjayan has sent us video, images and diary entries from his trip into one of the last old-growth temperate rainforests. Follow his week-long expedition right here — including video of grizzly bears and diving into amazing underwater worlds.
