About Honduras
Honduras is one of the largest countries in Central America and is home to a variety of biodiversity including pine-oak forests, dry forests and tropical forests. In 1980 the Honduran government created the Rio Platano biosphere reserve which is the only pine savanna in the world under legal protection and is home to jaguars, peccaries, capuchin monkeys, scarlet macaws and several more amazing species. The Conservancy is currently trying to protect the under conserved pine and oak forests of Mesoamerica. The northern half of the Olancho department has the largest stands of well preserved pine-oak forests and the Conservancy is moving in to this area as a priority this year. The Conservancy will be working on creating and enhancing the management of protected areas here, improving fire management and working closely with communities to help them steward their land. The Conservancy is also working on Cayos Cochinos Natural Monument in the Mesoamerican Reef. We are helping enforce protected areas, promote tourism best practices and help fishermen with alternatives. The Conservancy has also helped identify and protect three sites where fish come to breed in large numbers.
