September 02, 2009: The Nature Conservancy Applauds The Bahamas' Sweeping New Legal Protections for Sea Turtles
Sea turtles have gained another important haven in the Caribbean. Effective September 1, new laws in The Bahamas completely prohibit the harvesting, possession, purchase and sale of sea turtles and their eggs found either within Bahamian waters or on any of its hundreds of beaches.

July 06, 2009: The Nature Conservancy Receives a $10 Million USAID Multi-Year Grant to Fund Conservation in the Do
The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo, is launching the Dominican Republic’s most comprehensive environmental protection program in the history of the country. With a $10 million multi-year grant from USAID funding the expansion, the program will seek to engage industries in sustainable practices, conserve biodiversity and establish stable funding for a network of new and existing protected areas throughout the country.

The Bahamas and other Caribbean nations launch Caribbean Challenge. An effort by regional governments to build political support and generate long-term funding to protect at least 20 percent of participating countries’ marine and coastal habitats by 2020.
