Day 3: New Coral Species?

And Atoll

The day is “postcard-perfect” with a mirror sea and a deep blue sky. We’ve raced the dolphins across from Pohnpei to And Atoll.

And Atoll is only one of the 607 islands in Micronesia that are scattered across 1700 miles of the Pacific Ocean. It is about 45 minutes from Pohnpei, lying in the turquoise waters to is south west.

Emre and Lyndon wanted to check And Atoll and find out if there were coral species here that they had not seen around Pohnpei so far.

They were surprised to find corals that they had not seen before in the two weeks of the survey. They have now found more than 270 species of reef-building corals living in the blue waters of Pohnpei and And Atoll. There is an additional 30 or so corals that they have not been able to identify and which are likely to increase the total number of coral species in Pohnpei and And Atoll to almost 300 species.
