We just finished the first round of school visits and the Yunnan Golden Monkey costume character was a hit!  At all 10 schools we visited within the Laojun Mountain site, students laughed, had fun, and learned key facts about China’s “national treasure,” the Golden Monkey.

At the beginning of each visit, we start by asking simple questions: “What kind of animals and plants do you see near your home?”  Then we introduce a special friend who is living in the area, the Yunnan Golden Monkey, the clever, red-lipped animal. Students eagerly call out the name of the monkey, so we move on to asking more questions.  When students answer questions we give them monkey badges that we produced as a prize.

The kids get very excited about the monkey, the costume, the questions and get really involved in the activities.  The last question we ask is, “how do you plan to act now?”

Will they plant trees? Hands go up.
Will they hunt, cut down trees?  A chorus of No’s
Will they litter or pollute the water?  “NO!”
The students explain they will study and promote natural resource protection at school and at home.

It is very exciting to work with both students and teachers.  In fact, I am looking forward to going back to schools to see how students and teachers have followed-up on their new knowledge.
