Brief Biography
Dr. Anthony Chatwin is dedicated to the protection of marine biodiversity by working to protect sensitive areas of the marine environment and ensure that decision makers incorporate science-based, sustainable practices with marine-related human activities. He currently leads the South America Marine Program for The Nature Conservancy. From 2003-2006, Chatwin led ecoregional planning efforts across the Caribbean Basin in the eastern U.S. and in six countries in South America.

Since 2003 Chatwin has served as a member of the U.S. Marine Protected Area (MPA) Federal Advisory Committee that advises the Department of Commerce and Interior on strengthening the national system of MPAs.  From 1998 to 2002, Chatwin worked as staff scientist at the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the director of the Fisheries Program, lead advocate on the Marine Protected Areas initiative, and editor of the web-based quarterly newsletter, New England Ocean News. He also served as an advisor to the New England Fishery Management Council’s Groundfish and Habitat committees, and as a member of the Research Steering Committee. His doctoral research focused on fishery-independent stock assessments of small tunas in southeastern Brazilian waters.
