We are working in the Great Western Woodlands to assess and offset the impacts of a mining operation.

Mediterranean forest, woodland and scrub of the Great Western Woodlands in southwestern Western Australia. The woodlands form a critical connection between the wetter south west forests and dryer inland desert. The Nature Conservancy is working in Australia on an innovative pilot project that will support Barrick’s corporate goal of no net loss of biodiversity for all projects and sites.

The Conservancy is assessing the biodiversity impacts of current mining operations in the Great Western Woodlands and designing an offsets strategy for mitigating these impacts using the Development by Design framework.

At the conclusion of the project, the Conservancy will develop a set of offset options—these options will be the basis for recommendations for the most effective and cost-efficient offset portfolio.
