People and Conservation

Working with Indigenous People

A "Commitment to People, Communities and Cultures" is a central part of The Nature Conservancy’s core values. We are committed to local, on the ground involvement; we treat our partners with fairness and honesty; and we work collaboratively to develop practical conservation solutions.

Supporting the Cofán

We’ve supported Cofán initiatives in Ecuador to increase land access, land titles, land management, community-based park patrols, and park monitoring.

Conserving Grasslands

Through scientific planning and real estate acumen, we are helping a model for community-based conservation expand across northern Kenya.

Reinstating Homelands

We’re working with Aboriginal people to protect key landscapes in Australia — helping communities that seek to reconnect with their ancestral lands.

Respecting Traditions

In Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta we work with indigenous leaders who have approaches that are just as effective — if not more so — than conventional efforts.
