April 28, 2014, Valdivian Coastal Reserve. With the view to strengthening their joint actions in the area of marine environmental conservation and the promotion of best fishing practices, amongst other aims, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and FIPASUR signed a strategic alliance witnessed by Ann Maria Bravo, regional Secretary of Economy (SEREMI) among other local authorities.
During the event, Alfredo Almonacid, Manager and Coordinator of the Valdivian Coastal Reserve said that signing this type of agreements with trade organizations such as FIPASUR was really relevant for TNC. “We believe that the coordinated and cooperative work with the communities is the most effective way of generating instances of taking care of our natural resources, at the same time permitting us to clearly act upon the issues of common interest that permit us to structure specific action plans with a long-term vision. Similarly, this agreement will facilitate our work on issues related to the protection and conservation of marine land settings in the area of influence of the Valdivian Coastal Reserve incorporating better management practices and sustainability concepts”, he said.
Meanwhile, Marco Ide, FIPASUR President said that “ this agreement will permit us to keep on working with TNC now in a more formal and united way for the benefit of small fishermen and their families that live and/or work in the coastal region of the Valdivian Coastal Reserve. At the same time, it will make it possible for us to work as one unit seeking government and private sources of financing in order to create an integral development plan for our people, land and conservation of marine and land environment.”
Apart from signing this agreement, TNC is organizing in the region an international workshop for the Los Rios Region fishermen entitled “Opportunities and challenges in the value chains of the fishing sector in the Los Rios Region, Valdivia, Chile ”. The aim of this workshop for the Los Rios Region fishermen is to understand the setting where they fish within the context of the world seafood market and to explore different options that would permit them to invest in sustainability and sale of the results of their fishing efforts.
