Thursday, 21 November 2013. Valdivian Coastal Reserve. With the presence of regional authorities The Nature Conservancy (TNC) inaugurated new offices in Valdivia. This activity was part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Valdivian Coastal Reserve.
In a symbolic ceremony that highlighted the achievements of the 10 years of existence of the Valdivian Coastal Reserve (VCR) TNC officially inaugurated its new offices in Valdivia. At the ceremony TNC professionals presented the National Forestry Corporation CONAF with the first carbon credit certificate obtained in Chile for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (Spanish acronym REDD).
The NGO, with 60 years of experience worldwide and 10 years of existence in Chile, expressed its appreciation of the support from public and private institutions that have made the work in the Valdivian Coastal Reserve possible. Maryann Ramirez, TNC Conservation Manager, mentioned the high value of the work being carried out in Latin America and other regions.
Alfredo Almonacid, Valdivian Coastal Reserve Land Manager, listed the most important factors that made the VCR one of the most outstanding examples of world conservation. "With the effort and commitment of many people and institutions that are accompanying us today, we have been able to create a conservation model that has been very successful for the last 10 years," he said.
One of the most important moments of the ceremony was the presentation by TNC of the first REDD certificate of the native forest in the Reserve. It has become a national milestone as it is the first time in Chile that this objective was achieved. The certificate was presented to CONAF as the most enthusiastic driver of this achievement.
Carlos Mollenhauer, Regional SAG director, expressed his appreciation of TNC’s work in the Region. “It has been a privilege to work with TNC in the preservation of our natural resources, and above all the conservation of our wildlife and we hope this alliance will become stronger with time,” he said.
"For CONAF working with TNC has been very fruitful, because they´re strategic partners in the development of our protected areas and of the neighboring communities, therefore, we look forward to this collaborative work", José Carter, CONAF Los Rios regional director added.
The launch of the new TNC offices in Valdivia is the event that culminates the10th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve. Other activities included a photo exhibition at the Valdivia Bus Depot and at the Plaza de la República.
