Nature Conservancy Hunting Program: What’s New?

Recent changes we’ve made to our hunting program in Wisconsin.

Changes from 2012
Door Peninsula
Muehl Springs
  • Muehl Springs Preserve has been transferred to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Gromme/Rush Lake Preserve
  • Owen and Anne Gromme Preserve at Rush Lake has been transferred to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area

  • New hunting opportunity in Buffalo County. Click here to download map.
Changes from 2011
Baraboo Hills
  • As of 2011 we have eliminated the permit system for deer hunting at our large preserves. The lands that were previously in our public deer permit system are now open to the general public per Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) regulations. Click here to find maps of our Baraboo Hills preserves now open for deer hunting.
  • We now offer turkey hunting at our Baraboo Hills preserves per WDNR regulations; no permit is needed.
  • Trapping, small game and bear hunting opportunities are now offered on some lands. We ask that trappers, small game and bear hunters register with The Nature Conservancy. Registration is optional and is used to gather data on hunting and trapping patterns. See the Hunting Guidelines page for information on how to register.
Central Sands Region
  • We now offer turkey hunting at Quincy Bluff and Wetlands, Page Creek and Summerton Bog; no permit is needed.
Spring Green Preserve
  • We now offer turkey hunting at Spring Green Preserve; no permit is needed.
Door Peninsula
  • We will begin offering fall turkey hunting at our Door Peninsula preserves after November 1st; no permit required.
  • Pheasant, grouse and small game hunting will be offered at Mink River Preserve from November 1 to end of February.
  • Trapping, small game and bear hunting opportunities are now offered on some lands. We ask that trappers, small game and bear hunters register with The Nature Conservancy. Registration is optional and is used to gather data on hunting and trapping patterns. See the Hunting Guidelines page for information on how to register.
