• The Nature Conservancy protected 161 acres of scenic bluffland in the Village of Nelson, purchasing it from Aimee Hemion and the estate of her late husband Dwight Hemion.
  • The land is located in Buffalo County along Wisconsin’s Great River Road.
  • The Conservancy acquired a portion of the south end of rugged bluffs known locally as Twin Bluffs.
  • The bluffs are covered with dry prairies, cliffs and oak openings.
  • The prairies and woodlands are home to a wide array of plants including this puccoon.
  • The land also provides habitat for wildlife including bald eagles and other raptors, red-headed woodpeckers (shown here) and migratory songbirds.
  • The property, known as The Nature Conservancy Addition to the Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area, is open to the public for hiking, hunting, birding and other recreation opportunities.
  • Visitors will enjoy magnificent views from the bluffs over the Mississippi River valley.
