A Hampshire County preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy has been added to the National Park Service’s list of National Nature Landmarks.
Ice Mountain joins 14 other sites in West Virginia that have nationally significant biological and geological resources. The mountain is a long ridge that runs from south to north between Capon Bridge and Slanesville in Hampshire County.

A 5-square-mile chunk of wilderness at the north end of Canaan Valley will soon become the newest Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Management Area.
The 3,070-acre tract, now owned by the Canaan Valley Institute, includes more than three miles of the Blackwater River, a popular trout stream. The project was assisted by The Nature Conservancy. Learn more.

Watershed groups, county planners and others looking for the highest conservation or restoration priorities will be helped by the West Virginia Watershed Assessment Pilot Project, a project of the Nature Conservancy and the state Department of Environmental Protection under funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

WV's red spruce forests not only give us refuge on a sunny hike but provide us with a glimpse of West Virginia’s natural history. Virgin red spruce once covered more than 500,000 acres of the mountain landscape here. Unfortunately, aside from Gaudineer Knob and a few other small, isolated stands, most of the red spruce across West Virginia was eliminated during the logging era of the late nineteenth through early twentieth centuries.
