"The Nature Conservancy has given me a way to turn my passion for nature into something real and lasting. My contributions will help the places I love endure for generations. I like that!"
-- Scott W. Wyatt, trustee in Washington
Trustees contribute many unique strengths, skills, and talents to The Nature Conservancy. Today, the Conservancy has programs in all 50 states and 34 countries that are actively supported by a community of more than 1,500 trustees who bring their resources, influence and personal experience to achieving our mission. The Conservancy has become the world’s largest conservation organization, in large measure by being global and, simultaneously, forging a dynamic network of deeply-rooted local programs and volunteer leaders.
The Conservancy’s Board of Directors is vested with all fiduciary and governing responsibility for the organization. Boards of Trustees, accordingly, do not function like a fiduciary board. The parent organization performs many of the roles normally borne by a non-profit board, such as approving budgets, financial oversight and investment of reserves, and legal and tax compliance. We believe this non-traditional structure leaves the chapter trustees free to focus on furthering, rather than overseeing, the Conservancy's core mission. Trustee roles are increasingly shaped around three areas:
1.) Strategic thinking and problem solving – Helping assess situations and develop innovative strategies to solve problems, seize opportunities, and leverage our conservation reach.
2.) Providing access and influence – Helping establish effective relationships with leading individuals and institutions in philanthropy, public policy, private enterprise, science, education, and other sectors, while promoting the Conservancy‘s mission, goals, methods, and achievements.
3.) Demonstrating outstanding personal commitment – Highlighting the Conservancy as a top priority among their volunteer activities, and providing generous financial support, time, and energy to the organization locally, regionally and globally.
