Boundary Marking by Canoe -- in December

AmeriCorps members take advantage of mild weather to paddle to boundary posts along the LaPlatte.

Strange But True

The unseasonably mild, dry, mostly snowless days of December 2011 provided a unique opportunity at the LaPlatte River Marsh Natural Area in Shelburne: boundary marking by canoe in December!

After several days of balmy weather, AmeriCorps members Mollie Klepack and Donia Prince decided to take advantage of the rare confluence of mild temperatures and available days to repost the boundaries along the LaPlatte River by canoe.

Of course, in true Vermont form, on the appointed day, the forecast shifted from sun in the 50s to snow flurries!

But, says Donia, " this only added to the stark beauty of the day, which was punctuated by spotting great blue herons in flight, a mink scurrying across a logjam, and river otter tracks in the shoreline mud."
