TNC South Carolina Chapter celebrates Earth Day

Seventy-five members and guests of The South Carolina Chapter gathered for a waterfront Picnic for the Earth on Wadmalaw Island on Saturday, April 20th, at the home of Catherine and Frank Middleton. The picnic featured local produce and fresh local fish, and focused on The Nature Conservancy’s marine conservation work, with Mary Conley, director of TNC’s Southeastern Marine Conservation, highlighting innovative marine mapping initiatives and the importance of oyster restoration projects. “Our planet is 71% water, so it’s fitting that we talk about healthy oceans on Earth Day,” Conley said. South Carolina artist Mary Edna Fraser, whose large-scale batiks depict aerial landscapes of coastlines, marshes and estuarine ecosystems around the world, was a special guest speaker. Fraser described the role of beauty, in nature and in art, to inspire creativity and conservation and her own use of batik as a vehicle for environmental activism.

On Sunday, April 21, another 125 people of all ages gathered again on Wadmalaw to enjoy the soulful tunes of singer-songwriter Shannon Whitworth and her band. “What a treat it is to play to the spartina grass and the marshes, in front of this gorgeous waterfront backdrop,” said Whitworth, whose recent album, High Tide, was inspired by her own love of the South Carolina coast. All proceeds from the Earth Day events went to support the SC-TNC’s marine conservation efforts.
