Why You Should Visit:
Jones Gap State Park, located in northern Greenville County, is one of the most popular state parks in South Carolina. This mountainous, state park is part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area that includes more than 10,000 acres, including Caesars Head State Park and Wildcat Wayside State Park. Jones Gap is home to animals such as the rare wood frog, native brook trout, migratory birds, and multiple reptiles. This state park is also home to the Middle Saluda River, the state’s first designated Scenic River.

Location:
Marietta, in Greenville County, off of US Highway 276

Size:
4,246 acres.

TNC's Role in Protecting
In 2008, The Nature Conservancy led an effort in partnership with the S.C. State Parks System, to expand the acreage of Jones Gap to accommodate increasing public visitation to this gorgeous Upstate mountain park. A 300-acre property, adjacent to Jones Gap, became available but the economic recession made fundraising difficult. However, through a community-wide effort with the help of over 400citizens, the Conservancy privately raised enough funds to successfully purchase the land in 2011. This 300-acre addition was dedicated to the SC State Parks by The Nature Conservancy in summer 2012. See video to learn more about the dedication and this effort.
