The Conservancy's first project in South Carolina was the acquisition of 1,711 acres of ancient cypress-tupelo forest at Four Hole Swamp, the core of the Beidler Forest Sanctuary. The South Carolina Chapter officially was chartered in 1978 and, to date, has protected more than 330,000 acres across the Palmetto State.
