Are You Going to Picnic for Earth?

Take your family and friends along for a hike to celebrate Earth Day at Tillinghast Pond Management Area.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a guided hike around a magical pond, munching on locally made, artisanal granola? Our treat!

The Nature Conservancy invites you to join us at Tillinghast Pond Management Area in West Greenwich on Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 am for a free nature walk. The hike will highlight the Conservancy’s on-the-ground support for local agriculture – specifically the Tillinghast Pond hayfields, which we lease to a local farmer in support of one of the Rhody Fresh dairy farms.

This family-friendly event also gives us an opportunity to share the spotlight with our friends at the Providence Granola Project – makers of the best granola we’ve ever tasted. This local non-profit helps newly arrived international refugees start rebuilding their lives – providing a first job and valuable work experience.

The Nature Conservancy will provide the granola and plenty of cold Rhody Fresh milk – an instant picnic! Early spring songbirds and the season’s first butterflies will provide the entertainment. The observation platform at the north end of the pond is the perfect spot to refuel and enjoy one of the prettiest spots in Rhode Island.

Picnic for Earth is a global celebration of the planet we live on, the food it provides, and the community we share it with. It’s part of the All Hands on Earth movement, encouraging millions of people to help save our land and water – the natural resources that sustain us all.

If you can’t make it to Tillinghast Pond on April 20, think about hosting your own Picnic for Earth. Organizing a picnic is as simple as choosing a location, grabbing your picnic blanket, and spending time outdoors with family and friends around Earth Day. It can be as simple as you like. And we’d love to hear how it goes! Sign up at nature.org/earthday and tweet your stories and photos using the tag #picnic13 on Twitter or Facebook.  You can also share photos with other picnickers by posting on Instagram (use #picnic13 to share).

Please register for this nature walk with our Preserves Manager, Tim Mooney at 401-529-1072 or email to  tmooney@tnc.org.

In the unfortunate case of a cancellation of this event we would like to be able to reach you!  Please provide us with your contact information, including a telephone number and/or email address.  We appreciate it!
