Derek Johnson

Director of Protection and Zumwalt Prairie Conservation

“The Zumwalt Prairie is an amazing place. Landowners have taken good care of the landscape, and we have opportunity to work with members of some of the same families that have lived and built their livelihoods there for generations. There’s a lot of history: it’s an amazingly beautiful place and has looked like that for a long time.”

Derek has been working in The Nature Conservancy's protection department for over 13 years, including his first 6.5 with the Wisconsin program. In his current position, he oversees Oregon real estate activities and develops and implements other protection strategies that advance our conservation goals. Before joining the Conservancy in 1999, Derek worked as a mortgage broker in southern California. He has a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
