The Nature Conservancy today announced that Watt’s Grocery is the winner of the 2013 People's Choice Nature's Plate Award, honoring sustainable eateries in Durham.

Watt’s Grill topped the other four finalists, which included:

  • Bull City Burger and Brewery
  • Fairview Dining Room
  • Piedmont
  • Toast

Nature’s Plate is a people’s choice contest for top green restaurant. This year 18 Nature Conservancy chapters across the country participated in Nature’s Plate.

“Sustainable eating is good for our planet,” explains North Carolina Nature Conservancy Director Katherine Skinner. “We want people to think about how they eat at home and when they are dining out. Nature’s Plate is a way to get that conversation started.”

The North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy does work that contributes to sustainable eating. The chapter builds oyster reefs off the North Carolina coast. In addition to helping to ensure that oysters reach the plates of North Carolina diners, the reefs also play a valuable role in purifying water and buffering the shoreline from storms. The Conservancy has also been responsible for protecting more than 225,000 acres of property that are now part of North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission game lands, providing people with the opportunity to hunt for local food.

The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The Conservancy and its more than 1 million members have protected nearly 120 million acres worldwide. Visit The Nature Conservancy on the Web at www.nature.org.
