John and Anne Barry, of Charlotte, and their friend Merrill Lynch are in a four-wheel drive SUV that is slowly laboring up a steep, rutted road on the side of Phoenix Mountain.
The road is really just a path through the wooded eastern flank of the mountain, with branches slapping the open windows of the SUV.
John Barry is board chairman of the North Carolina chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and Lynch is the group's northern-mountains conservation practitioner. The Barrys wanted to go with Lynch to see the mountain that the nonprofit conservation group has pursued for decades. Learn More

The Venus Flytrap ONLY grows in the wild within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina. And it's just two steps away from being put on the endangered species list, thanks in part to land developers and plant poachers. David Huppert introduces us to what Charles Darwin called, "the most wonderful plant in the world." (wunctv.org)

In the Southeast corner of North Carolina there is the Green Swamp, a habitat with high biodiversity and unique species. The Green Swamp is one of the best remaining examples of longleaf pine savannas, bay forests and pocosins ecosystems left. The World Wildlife Fund has identified the Green Swamp as one of the top 10 ecoregions in North America for the number of species of plants and animals. This pine savannah is home to 14 carnivorous plants and 18 species of orchids. Unusual animals found in the swamp include the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (which nests in the trunks of live longleaf pines), Henslow's sparrow, Bachman's sparrow, Hessel's hairstreak butterfly and the American alligator. Some of the nation's richest and most important ecosystems lie where the ocean meets the land. It's these same coastal areas that are going to disappear as sea level continues to rise as a result of climate change.
But in one wildlife refuge in North Carolina, conservationists are attempting what would seem to be impossible: fighting back the sea. Read more.

What can we do about climate change?
One thing we can do is prepare for it, by working with Mother Nature. At the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina, where rising seas are eroding the shoreline, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Nature Conservancy are giving the Albemarle Peninsula a fighting chance.
