Sara Babin, Conservation Coordinator

Sara Babin

Conservation Coordinator
(Wilmington)

I grew up in Vermont where I also attended college but I moved away years ago because it was too darn cold! My family is still there so I get to visit whenever I want. I am married and have two cats and a sweet corgi named Taffy. My hobbies include cooking, surfing, running, gardening, sewing, etc...I could spend all day listing the things I love to do.

Year started at TNC: I first started with TNC in college. I had an internship with the Vermont Chapter doing volunteer coordinating for invasive species removal. After that I had a seasonal position at TNC with the New York Chapter on Long Island doing endangered shorebird recovery, monitoring least terns and piping plovers. I started in my current position as Conservation Coordinator in 2008 and absolutely love the diversity of the work I do.

Favorite TNC Preserve and why: My favorite NC preserve is the Green Swamp; there is just no other place like it on earth. I am always captivated by the biodiversity there. My favorite overall TNC preserve is Bald Mountain Preserve in VT because of the amazing views of the Lake Champlain Valley. The forests along the preserve’s nature trail are so rich and fragrant; it so much reminds me of my childhood.

A typical good day for you at work: A good day at work is one that is spent outside. I could be doing anything: burning, trail work, seed collecting, monitoring, kayaking, whatever. If I am outside working in a nature preserve to help ensure that it will be natural space forever it is a very good day.

Place in the world you would most like to visit but have never been to: Well since I am a fan of tropical weather (I did live in St. John for several years, a story for another day) and I love to surf, I think at this point in my life I would most like to go to Hawaii. I keep telling myself someday I will live there.
