Julie Chappell, Director of Operations

Julie Chappell

Director of Operations (Durham)

I grew up in rural Dinwiddie County, Virginia, and got my degree in geology and psychology at William & Mary. My favorite things to do are reading about, preparing and partaking in good food and drink, as well as gardening, music/books/movies, and volunteering at the Carolina Theatre of Durham.

Year started at TNC: 1983 – Interviewed for three different positions before actually landing one.

Favorite TNC Preserve and why: I don’t think I have a favorite, although I do have fond memories of Long Valley Farm. Each one is beautiful and special in its own way. My very first visit to a preserve, though, was in a 4-seater plane with then-state director Bill deBuys and then-regional director Tom Massengale. We flew into Manteo and spent the day at Nags Head Woods.

A typical good day for you at work: I get a lot of questions about finances from co-workers. It’s rewarding to finish a big project or to do something out-of-the-ordinary or creative. Unfortunately, I typically don’t get out of the office much.

Place in the world you would most like to visit but have never been to: Morocco!
