Calverton Ponds Preserve

The Calverton Pond’s Preserve is a 350-acre assemblage of pine barrens and coastal plain ponds jointly owned by the Nature Conservancy and Suffolk County.

The property has been managed by the Conservancy since the early 1990’s, with the help of funds raised by the Denis and Katherine Krusos Foundation. The coastal plain pond community is known as a globally significant system due to its composition of rare, threatened and endangered species.

There are roughly 2.5 miles of maintained trail at Calverton Ponds Preserve. The trails all lead to exceptional views of 3 ponds, Sandy Pond located in the center of the preserve, Fox to the west and the smaller, shallower Bock Pond to east.

It is extremely important that ALL visitors remain on the designated trail system due to the composition of rare, threatened and endangered plant species. Tread softly and watch every step that you take.

Beautifully arranged wildflowers like Rhexia virginica can be spotted along the shoreline at several overlook points. This plant typically flowers between July and September.

Bullfrogs are among the many different amphibian species that live within this complex.

Another strikingly beautiful wildflower found at this preserve is Coreopsis rosea also known as tickseed. This wildflower is favored by the insect pollinators and is considered rare in New York State.

This dragonfly exoskeleton is one of many that you might see in and along the shores at several overlook points. Using binoculars, scan the close vegetation and see if you can pick out any of these during your hike.
