The Nature Conservancy of New Mexico is recruiting volunteers to assist with surveys for a rare plant at field sites located in the bootheel of New Mexico (near Hachita, NM).
We will be surveying for the Chihuahua scurf pea – a rare plant limited to just a few known populations in southern New Mexico and Arizona. Field crews will walk transect lines with GPS and radios to locate new populations to both clear areas where the BLM will be performing restoration activities, and to improve a species distribution model of this plant.
Work will include walking long distances in exposed terrain and volunteers should be willing to commit to at least three days. Housing will be provided. Surveys will begin as early as March 19, 2012 and last one to three weeks, depending on weather conditions and how long the plants remain.
Interested volunteers, please contact Karla Sartor at ksartor@tnc.org with a brief description of your interest as well as background in botany, any GPS experience (not required), and dates available.
