And The Winner Is...

50th Anniversary Preserve Letterboxing Challenge

Meet Peter and Wanda Miner, the grand prize winners of the New Hampshire Chapter’s 50 Anniversary Preserve Letterboxing Challenge! Not only did Peter and Wanda collect all of the series on all the preserves, but they were among the very first to complete the entire challenge.

Hailing from Rhode Island, they made over a half dozen trips all around the Granite State to collect all the stamps. “From spring through fall, from the bottom of Rhode Island to the top of New Hampshire, from near urban to rather remote locations – collecting all those delightful carvings and visiting all those beautiful preserves was its own reward,” says Wanda.

“We still remember how excited we'd get each time a New Hampshire preserve series got listed online,” she reminisced. “And we'd figure out how to best work it into a trip schedule.”

The couple wins a two-night stay at Waterville Valley, complete with ski passes and other activities – a prize package generously donated by Waterville Valley Resort. They plan to use the weekend away to celebrate Peter’s 65th birthday. “We are absolutely delighted to now have another trip to New Hampshire to look forward to for this coming winter!”

Peter and Wanda are veterans of the letterboxing world. Over the past decade, they’ve collected over 35,000 letterboxes all around the country! They are also big fans of The Nature Conservancy’s mission. “The Nature Conservancy has long been our top pick for leaving an environmental legacy because of the way it quietly goes about protecting such a great variety of remarkable places and making them accessible to the public,” remarks Wanda. “Combine that special feeling we have for TNC preserves with our love for letterboxing, the thrill of discovering "hidden treasures" (little "folk art" carvings, we call them) while quietly walking in beautiful places, and it's no wonder that the 50th Anniversary Preserve Letterboxing Challenge sparked our interest more than just about any other letterboxing activity we've done in years!”

The grand prize contest may have ended, but the challenge certainly lives on. Everyone who collects all 12 preserve series will receive a 50th Anniversary Preserve Letterboxing Challenge patch (see how to claim yours). The patch is a cool reward for sure, but the real prize is all the amazing places you’ll visit along the way. Peter and Wanda know so. “We hope that many other folks will be inspired to take up the challenge to protect these special places as well!”
