Description
A vital connection between the Charles M. Deaton Nature Preserve and the Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area, this site helps protect an important river corridor used by animals such as the following:
- Black bear
- Great egret
- Anhinga
- American alligator
- Otter
- Wild Turkey
- Yellow-blotched map turtle (found only in the Pascagoula basin)
An abundance of plant species is supported by the removal of non-native species such as cogongrass and Chinese tallow, which can grow quickly and out-compete native species. Native plants include:
- Bald cypress
- Water tupelo
- Wild clematic
- Palmetto
- Mayhaw
- Swamp chestnut oak
- Cypress
- Crabapple
- Cherrybark oak
- Willow oak
- Persimmon
- Sugarberry
