Herman Murrah Preserve

This 1,600-acre preserve includes a 180-acre island in the Pascagoula River.

A vital connection between the Charles Deaton Preserve and the Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area, this site helps protect an important river corridor used by animals such as the following:

  • Black bear
  • Great egret
  • Anhinga
  • American alligator
  • Otter
  • Wild Turkey
  • Yellow-blotched map turtle (found only in the Pascagoula basin)

An abundance of plant species is supported by the removal of non-native species such as cogongrass and Chinese tallow, which can grow quickly and out-compete native species. Native plants include:

  • Bald cypress
  • Water tupelo
  • Wild clematic
  • Palmetto
  • Mayhaw
  • Swamp chestnut oak
  • Cypress
  • Crabapple
  • Cherrybark oak
  • Willow oak
  • Persimmon
  • Sugarberry

Thanks to our partners who have helped protect the area's plant and communities:

  • Coastal Impact Assistance Program
  • Conservancy staff and volunteers
  • Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality
  • Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks
  • North American Wetlands Conservation Council
