The Mississippi River starts as a small stream flowing from the north end of Lake Itasca, at Itasca State Park (Minnesota's oldest state park). A path of river rocks give thousands of visitors each year the opportunity to walk or wade across the mighty Mississippi River at its source. The Nature Conservancy works to protect the Mississippi River and its watershed through the Great Rivers Partnership which is a collaboration between a wide array of partners dedicated to the conservation of the world's great river systems for the benefit of the people and the species that depend upon them for life.
