Tatkon Preserve

A trail loops through ledges and woodlands, as well as groves of hemlock and white pine.

The Conservancy's Berkshire Taconic Landscape Program headquarters are located here. The Tatkon Preserve has ledges and woodlands and features a vernal pool and calcium-loving plant communities.

The preserve is on LeGeyt Road in Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Why the Conservancy Selected This Site
Donated by Carol Tatkon in 1996, this preserve adjoins other conserved land.

What to See: Plants
Groves of hemlock and white pine are visible, as well as calcareous ledges with maidenhair spleenwort and walking fern.

What to See: Animals
Piliated Woodpeckers are often heard in the trees. White tailed deer and Bobcat are occasionally seen on the preserve.

Directions
From Boston:

  • Take the Mass Pike to Exit 2.
  • Turn left off the ramp on to Route 20 and then turn right on to Route 102.
  • Follow this and take a left on to Route 7S.
  • Follow this through the center of Sheffield and turn right onto Silver St.
  • Proceed approximately 2.3 miles and turn right on LeGeyt Rd. (dirt).
  • Follow this to the Tatkon House Nature Conservancy office and park in the parking lot on the right.
