Three years ago, Nature Conservancy ecologist Christian Marks began a project to restore the American elm to Connecticut River floodplain forests using a population of disease-resistant trees. To accomplish this, Marks travels throughout New England to locate mature healthy elms. His team then harvests 15 to 20 branches from each tree in the spring before the leaf buds are open.

With help from a prominent conservation organization, 69 acres of upland forest and wetlands in a key landscape along the headwaters of Roberts Meadow Brook in Chesterfield are now protected. The newly protected land borders the 215-acre Brewer Brook Wildlife Management Area, owned by Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game and a 200-acre conservation restriction held by Kestrel Land Trust.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced Monday that is has partnered with the Nature Conservancy to add an 80-acre parcel in Chesterfield to the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The land was owned by Jeffrey Poirier of Berkshire Hardwoods Inc., who sold the property Nov. 22 to Fish & Wildlife for $320,000.
