The completion of the Eel River Headwaters Restoration Project was celebrated today with a dedication ceremony and presentation of the nationally prestigious Coastal America Partnership Award to the project team. The project restored over 60 acres of habitat and two miles of headwater stream that had been extensively altered and degraded by human use. The restoration has made dramatic improvements to wetland and riverine habitat that resulted in new and more abundant fish and wildlife, helped the local ecology become more resilient to climate change, and enhanced public use of the conservation land. With help from a prominent conservation organization, 69 acres of upland forest and wetlands in a key landscape along the headwaters of Roberts Meadow Brook in Chesterfield are now protected. The newly protected land borders the 215-acre Brewer Brook Wildlife Management Area, owned by Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game and a 200-acre conservation restriction held by Kestrel Land Trust.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced Monday that is has partnered with the Nature Conservancy to add an 80-acre parcel in Chesterfield to the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The land was owned by Jeffrey Poirier of Berkshire Hardwoods Inc., who sold the property Nov. 22 to Fish & Wildlife for $320,000. It is located along the Dead Branch Brook, off East Street about a quarter mile from Main Street (Route 143.) See the Gazette's article and photos.

Then, this critical coastal habitat was nearly obliterated.
