Winter at Kankakee Sands

Even in the frosty winter months, there is plenty to see and do at Kankakee Sands. Watch for white-tailed deer and coyote tracks in the snow, and you may even catch a glimpse of these animals during your visit. Minks, foxes and badgers are some of the other wildlife you might see during the winter months.

Birders will enjoy the arrival of winter raptors such as golden eagles, northern harriers, rough-legged gawks, and short-eared owls, all of which are common at Kankakee Sands during the winter. They will also catch glimpses of redheaded woodpeckers, chickadees, juncos, cardinals and mourning doves.
