Jason's Journal: Preparing for Visitors

By Jason Beverlin
Deputy Director of the Illinois River Program

November 2009 — We've recently dug into plans to build visitor facilities at Emiquon. Boardwalks, a canoe launch, boat launch, hiking trails, and observation decks are newly under construction. I'll keep you updated as construction progresses over the coming months, and tell you the latest about the new facilities that will make your visiting experience here more educational and comfortable.

The new architecture was designed to flow visually with the natural landscape by MACTEC Engineering and Consultants and Sutton Studios. We're excited to see their creativity come to fruition as our General Contractor, Leander Construction starts work.

In my previous journal entries, I've written about the many visitors we've had here at the wetland already. As our site grows in depth and breadth, I'm looking forward to expanding that list with new scientific exchanges, school groups, and others who are interested in learning about our progress developing a wetland restoration model that benefits not only those of us near the Illinois River but also people who rely on similar river systems around the world!
