The Lake Festival and Grand Opening celebration at Emiquon on June 4, 2011, kicked off with speeches from staff at The Nature Conservancy in Illinois and local elected officials.
Officially opening the new facilities, left to right, Lewistown Mayor John King, Conservancy Trustee David Thomas, Senator David Koehler, Representative Mike Unes, President of the Economic Development Council for Central Illinois Vicki Clark and Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Caterpillar Inc. John Heller
Visitors enjoyed canoe rides from the newly installed canoe launch.
For some, it was their first canoe ride ever!
Gaining a birds-eye-view of the preserve from the new spotting scopes on the Wetland Observatory, visitors saw Emiquon under a new lens.
Visitors walked nearly 800 feet into the wetland on newly constructed boardwalks.
New interpretive panels provided visitors information about wildlife at Emiquon and the Conservancy’s work at the preserve, providing educational opportunities for all.
Conservancy volunteers also provided educational opportunities during the event!
All of these new facilities, combined with the natural beauty of the preserve, are reason enough to come see Emiquon for yourself!
