Growing up in Wilmington, Robert Buccini rode his bike through Brandywine Creek State Park in Wilmington and still enjoys access to all of the trails and green space found there today.
Growing up in Wilmington, Robert Buccini forged a life-long friendship with Richie Jones, the Conservancy’s Delaware State Director. As in most enduring friendships, they have supported each other during every phase of life – growing up, starting families and establishing careers. So when Jones took on his role with the Conservancy, it wasn’t long before he sought Buccini’s input and involvement as a member of the Delaware chapter’s Board of Trustees.
“Knowing of Richie’s love of the outdoors, I was thrilled to see him transition from practicing law to using his skills towards protecting nature,” says Buccini. “I am honored to become involved in this as well.”
Land is actually another thing Jones and Buccini have in common – Jones works to conserve it; Buccini develops it, particularly in urban areas as co-founder of the Buccini/Pollin Group (BPG). Paradoxically, there is a convergence of interests here that may not be apparent at first blush.
“The field of conservation is engaged in a shift towards recognizing that nature sustains not only wildlife, but human beings as well,” says Jones. “This thinking is leading us more and more towards seeking out ways of making nature more accessible to humans, who increasingly reside in urban areas like Wilmington. Doing so not only benefits physical and mental health, but also broadens the base for conserving nature into the future.”
Buccini looks forward to playing a role in helping the Conservancy connect humans and nature – especially in urban areas like Wilmington.
“Serving on the Conservancy’s Delaware Board of Trustees will be a great opportunity to build upon, and even connect, the green spaces that have been established by conservation organizations in Delaware and in southeastern Pennsylvania,” adds Buccini. “For me, this position on the Board is not only relevant to my business, but also to my role as a father of four young children who spend a lot of time outdoors – including on family hikes and kayaking adventures throughout the year.”
