Dogfish Dash Does Good

The Nature Conservancy and the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery have been working together for 7 years to raise money for conservation in Delaware.

The Dogfish Dash is a slightly off-centered 5K & 10K road race that starts and finishes at the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton. In addition to the chip-timed race, the Dash includes tasty morsels, live entertainment and Dogfish Head beer. There is also a costume contest with awards for the best “recycled” costume (individual and team).

Since 2007 the Dogfish Dash has generated more than $300,000 for the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

  • 2014 - 75,000
  • 2013 - $51,600
  • 2012 - $38,500
  • 2011 - $33,500
  • 2010 - $26,000
  • 2009 - $25,000
  • 2008 - $20,000
  • 2007 - $10,000

The 9th Annual Dogfish Dash is in the books, with 2,000 participants from around the country, 100 volunteers and $75,000 raised for The Nature Conservancy in Delaware! Special thanks to Sam and Mariah Calagione, Mark Carter, and the dedicated staff of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, volunteers from Chesapeake Utilities, Surfrider Foundation and many others who made the event possible.

According to Blue Hen Organics, who oversaw waste disposal for the event, the Dash succeeded in operating almost waste-free.

  • Composted Material: 638lbs
  • Single Stream Recycling: 421lbs
  • Trash: 85lbs

That is a recycling rate of 92.5%. Thanks to the work of volunteers from Surfrider Foundation, who managed the waste stations and did a great job of sorting waste. It’s great to see the recycling rate went up and there was slightly less trash generated compared to last year even though you had a lot more people.

The Nature Conservancy’s Delaware Chapter is grateful for this enduring partnership with the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, a company that appreciates Delaware's natural landscapes which, when healthy, produce clean water and healthy soils for the ingredients going into their products. We are eternally grateful that this forward-thinking and environmentally-conscious Delaware-based company has generously dedicated proceeds from the annual 5K/10K Dogfish Dash to The Nature Conservancy’s Delaware Chapter for the past seven years!

The 10th annual Dogfish Dash takes place Sunday, September 27, 2015. Registration for the race fills up quick. Stay tuned for more information and consider lending your support as a volunteer.
