Maria Dziembowska

When not working in the Conservancy’s Wilmington office, Maria Dziembowska enjoys spending time in nature on two wheels.

Eco-Tip: Whenever she can, Maria takes advantage of the natural light in her office and keeps the lights off. She also reuses and recycles supplies and equipment as much as possible.

Maria Dziembowska began working with The Nature Conservancy's Delaware chapter in August 2012.

What are your job duties as the chapter's Operations Specialist?

Maria Dziembowska:

According to my job description, I manage the day-to-day operations of the chapter, including office administration, finance, information systems management and Trustee relations. In reality, I do these things and much, much more!

Nature.org:

Have you always had an interest in conservation?

Maria Dziembowska:

I developed an appreciation for nature at a young age. As a child, I was fortunate enough to spend my summers outside of Warsaw, Poland working on a farm alongside my grandfather. He imbued me with a deep appreciation for nature and the important role that we as humans play both as beneficiaries of nature, its cultivators and protectors.

Nature.org:

How did your career path lead to working with The Nature Conservancy?

Maria Dziembowska:

Working in positions that seek to engage people with the environment is a clear trend in my professional career. It’s also reflected in my academic background. As a sociologist, I’ve adopted a unique perspective on the role that people, human culture, social norms and social relationships play in efforts to improve the natural environment.

Nature.org:

What projects have your focus these days?

Maria Dziembowska:

Learning the ropes has my focus. The Conservancy is a global organization and there is so much to learn! During this time I’ll get a handle on how to ensure that the chapter’s daily operations support the work that is executed in the field! The more I know about how things work on the inside, the more I am able to share that knowledge with others and to help them work efficiently and effectively.

Nature.org:

What do you hope to tackle over the next couple of years?

Maria Dziembowska:

I have considerable experience with managing volunteers, planning events and building strategic partnerships, which I hope to utilize to help the chapter achieve its outreach and marketing goals. If I know myself well, I will eventually take the initiative on some outreach projects. I am especially interested in getting kids more involved in conservation. I’m excited to partner with area schools on some interesting projects that we’re working on!

Prior to becoming the Conservancy’s Operations Specialist in Delaware, Maria worked at the Cadence Foundation, a non-profit organization working with Philadelphia and Wilmington schools, to help kids develop important life-skills through the sport of cycling. Prior to that, Maria worked at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia where she organized events to encourage people to bicycle for recreation, transportation and environmental stewardship. Maria holds a Masters in Sociology from UCLA and a Bachelors in Political Science from Haverford College.
