Donor Spotlight- Fortune Brands Home & Security

Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (FBHS) recently made a philanthropic contribution toward The Nature Conservancy’s freshwater initiatives, earmarking much of the gift toward conservation efforts in the Great Lakes. FBHS is headquartered in Deerfield, IL, and produces Moen® faucets, MasterBrand® cabinets, Therma-Tru® entry doors, Simonton® windows and Master Lock® security products. Following are some remarks from CEO Chris Klein regarding the recent partnership with The Nature Conservancy.

Why are freshwater conservation and the Great Lakes important to Fortune Brands Home & Security?

Chris Klein:

Since many of FBHS’s associates, customers and their families live and work in Great Lakes states, we felt it made a lot of sense to support the Conservancy’s work in this important freshwater system.

The Great Lakes are a natural treasure. They hold 95 percent of North America’s surface freshwater and house one-fifth of all fish species found on the continent. They are also the source of many recreational opportunities. The Nature Conservancy is doing important work on behalf of this resource in our backyard, and we are pleased to be able to support their efforts.

Why did you choose to support The Nature Conservancy?

Chris Klein:

Environmental issues and sustainability are of growing importance to FBHS and our customers, consumers and communities. To better demonstrate our interest in environmental sustainability, we looked to work with a reputable conservation agency.

We liked The Nature Conservancy because of its respected, pragmatic approaches to identifying and solving environmental issues on a wide scale. We appreciate the way the Conservancy partners with other organizations and businesses to help study, clean and restore indispensable natural habitats like the Great Lakes.

How else is Fortune Brands Home & Security committed to sustainability?

Chris Klein:

Besides supporting The Nature Conservancy, Fortune Brands Home & Security believes that part of being a good corporate citizen means making environmentally responsible decisions in our own business practices and supporting products that can help consumers use fewer natural resources.

In 2011 and 2010, Moen received recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its significant efforts to promote and encourage water conservation and advance the EPA’s WaterSense program’s mission through its development of water conserving showers and faucets. In addition, our window, door and millwork brands offer consumers advanced technology substitutes for wood, and Energy Star-designated products across our window and door lines can help homeowners reduce energy consumption.

MasterBrand Cabinets helped create the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Environmental Stewardship Program, which encourages cabinet manufacturers to use environmentally responsible materials and manufacturing processes. These are just some examples of ways in which FBHS is mindful of environmental sustainability.

We will work with The Nature Conservancy to provide hands-on opportunities for our associates to become involved in conservation near where they live and work. It’s important to us that our associates play an active role in this partnership.
