Smart Growth in Mongolia

Mongolia is home to some of the world’s only remaining expanses of wild grasslands — but it's also rich in oil and minerals that could be a huge economic boon to the country's people. Extracting those resources could also fragment the landscape and cut off critical animal migration routes, not to mention damage freshwater lakes and rivers on which communities depend. Luckily, the Conservancy’s Development by Design approach has helped identify the highest-priority areas for conservation and offered guidance about how intelligent development can best protect these places without hindering progress.
